Introduction to Nam Nung Nature Reserve
History of Formation and Development
Nam Nung Nature Reserve is named in Decision 194/CT, dated August 9, 1986, of the Chairman of the Council of Ministers with a proposed area of 20,000 ha.
In 1994, the Forest Survey and Planning Institute coordinated with the University of Forestry, Dak Lak Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Dak Lak Provincial Survey and Planning Team to conduct biodiversity surveys and develop an investment project for Nam Nung Nature Reserve. The area of the nature reserve proposed in the investment project is 10,849 ha, of which the strict protection zone area is 6,156 ha and the ecological restoration zone is 4,693 ha.
On February 12, 1995, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development approved the project according to Official Letter No. 335/LN-KH, and on October 30, 1996, the Provincial People’s Committee also approved the investment project according to Decision No. 2067/QD-UB (Dak Lak Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, 2000).
The nature reserve management board was established based on the investment project approval decision of Dak Lak Provincial People’s Committee. Currently, the Management Board has 14 staff members, one headquarters, and 3 protection stations.
Nam Nung Nature Reserve has 02 main ecosystems: natural broadleaf evergreen forest ecosystem and natural mixed bamboo forest ecosystem. Of these, the natural broadleaf evergreen forest ecosystem occupies a large area, accounting for over 90% of the total area of the nature reserve.
Topography and Hydrology
Nam Nung Nature Reserve is located in the southwest of Dak Lak province, in the territory of Quang Son commune (Dak Nong district) and Duc Xuyen and Nam Nung communes (Krong No district). The nature reserve is located in the center of the Central Highlands, with highland terrain. The area is located in a mountain block rising from the plateau, with the highest peak being Nam Jer Bri mountain at 1,578 m. The average altitude of the remaining plateau is about 800 m.
Within the nature reserve, there are two main stream systems: The northern stream system of the nature reserve flows into Dak Pri stream and the southern stream system flows into Dak N’Tao stream. Both of these stream systems flow into the Krong No river.
Biodiversity
The nature reserve has 3 main vegetation types:
Low mountain evergreen tropical forest
Lowland evergreen tropical forest and lowland semi-deciduous forest type
Low mountain tropical forest distributed at altitudes above 1,000 m with dominant vegetation. This forest type also has a subtype of mixed broadleaf and coniferous tropical forest on low mountains, distributed at altitudes of 1,000-1,300 m.
According to the investment project, 408 species of higher vascular plants, 58 mammal species, 127 bird species, and 33 reptile species have been recorded for the nature reserve. However, the origin of these documents has not been clearly identified, and the conservation-related species mentioned in the investment project also need to be verified.
